yes shut up this gets its own post
The thing I love best about this gif (from here) is that it has the emphatic “No!” part of the “Not without you!” line, which I think is the best part of the whole line. ‘Not without you’ goes without saying, but the ~fierceness of the denial…
Ugh, Bucky Barnes, you will be the death of me.
It says a lot about their friendship, too, and about how much Steve means to Bucky. The film is, of course, told from Steve’s perspective, so we don’t know too much about Bucky and what he’s gone through (a complete travesty imho).
However, in this scene, you see Bucky go from someone who’s been captured, probably worked beyond his means, and tortured—when Steve found him, he was exhausted, probably on the brink of giving up, delirious—to asking Steve how he was, and if what happened with the serum hurt. Then, they’re trying to get out of the base and Bucky keeps pushing Steve ahead of him, and it’s clearly obvious from both of those things that Bucky cares a hell of a lot more for Steve than he does for himself.
And here, oh god, right here when the bridge falls and there’s clearly no way across, Bucky’s still scrambling for some sort of idea, bringing up rope, even though there isn’t one, because the idea of Steve not being able to make it out just doesn’t make sense. There has to be a way to save him. And when Steve asks him to go—”No, not without you!”—it is exactly Bucky’s intense reaction that shows you how much Steve means to him. The idea of leaving him behind, of being alive while Steve is dead, is completely intolerable to Bucky. He won’t have it; it won’t happen. Steve is all that Bucky has, and vice versa.
